The original Roberts was established in 1889 by W.R. Roberts, a butcher who owned a shop located in the San Francisco Tenderloin District. When his grandson George returned to California after serving in Germany in 1958, he was made aware by his cousin of an old country store in Woodside that was for sale.
George came down the peninsula from San Francisco and liked what he saw, and took a small loan from his father to establish the Roberts name in Woodside. In 1960, George Roberts purchased the current store location from Emott Caldwell, and the rest is history.
In 1966, a budding viticulturist, Bob Mullen was in his sixth year growing grapes in Woodside and converting them into Woodside Vineyards wine. As a long-time regular customer to Roberts Market, one day he approached their wine buyer and convinced her to carry his locally produced wine establishing a long and valued business relationship that has continued over the past 50 plus years.
Bob now in his mid-90s continues to make personal deliveries to Roberts Market in Woodside and Portola Valley, as well as his other original accounts sprinkled throughout the Santa Cruz Mountains.
